Photographing Birds in flight- Comparison between OMD EM1 MII and Lumix G9

Image
For full disclosure, I own both these camera bodies and lenses tested and I do not have any kind of financial arrangement or sponsorship with any camera company (but I wish I did :) ) These findings are based on my personal experience and your experience could vary. Tests included the following combinations of camera bodies and lenses 1) Lumix G9 with Pan Leica 100-400 f/4.0-6.3 2) Olympus OMD Em1 MII with Olympus 300mm f/4 pro lens Please refer to my earlier, rather "more scientific " review of G85 and OMD EM1 MII. https://diminutivelens.blogspot.com/2017/05/daniel-cox-very-highly-accomplished.html Shooting a dog running at you and a  bird flying are two totally different scenarios. I could control at least some of the variables such as direction of anticipated movement, distance from the subject and the background while shooting speeding pups. With Birds in flight, we can hope to control some of these parameters at times, but often, its just too unpredictab...

A User experience of the Pro capture (ProCap) Mode in Olympus OMD Em1 MII

A User experience of the Pro capture (ProCap) Mode in Olympus OMD Em1 MII The pro capture mode on Olympus OMD EM1 M2 has received a lot of press in the recent past. Coming from a background of  shooting action using continuous AutoFocus, I decided to give this new mode of capturing images a try.  During the few times I tried ProCap mode, I have to say that the continuous autofocus tracking is also very solid and the results are superlative. The image below was captured in the ProCap mode. Post processing of the background was done in on1 photo raw using radial blur to create the effect I was looking for. Literally and figuratively, I do love the "focus" demonstrated in the dog's expression. In the ProCap mode, the camera starts recording continuously as soon as the focus button is pressed and continues to record for many more frames after the shutter is pressed. Multiple sequential RAW images prior to, as well as after the shutter is released are written to th...

Continuous Auto Focus on Micro- Fourthirds; My experience Daniel Cox, a very highly accomplished photographer ( Naturalexposures.com ) has helped numerous photographers,  myself included, to lessen the load of my photo gear while traveling. However, smaller form factor can bring about other limitations and compromises. Foremost, among them has been the criticism that micro four thirds (MFT) cameras were not capable of fast action photography... This myth has been shattered by the introduction of newer models of MFT cameras (Panasonic and Olympus) capable of continuous autofocus for shooting fast action. The speeding pooch test outlined by Dan ( http://naturalexposures.com/panasonic-lumix-gh4/ ) poses a significant challenge to the photographer and  the predictive autofocus system of any camera. I ran these tests on my MFT equipment for the following reasons: to understand and optimize the settings of the equipment I own compare the performance of the 2 cameras, so that ...
